Your AI Copilot to decode any research paper

Upload 1 file

"The highlighted text discusses the electrochemical properties of calcium-tin (Ca-Sn) alloy anodes for Ca-ion chemistries. The SEM images in Fig. 4a-d indicate that the as-prepared pristine Ca x Sn aggregates have a typical particle size in the range 1-30 μm. After discharge and charge in the initial cycles, the alloy particles exhibited porous microstructure, as shown in the images for the samples from the 20th cycle. The image for the sample from the 3000th cycle shows that uniform rod-shaped crystalline solids (100-300 nm in width) appeared upon prolonged cycling. In addition, increased boron (B) containing species were detected with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), implying the decomposition of the electrolyte over 3000 cycles (Fig. 4d). The compositional changes after cycling were further tracked by ex-situ XRD (Fig. 4e), showing the presence of Ca x Sn was not detectable in the 20th cycle and the intensity of the Bragg peaks at 14.9° and 17.2° assigned for CaSn 3 varied at the discharge and charge states.

The Bragg peaks are the points of maximum intensity in the diffraction pattern of a crystalline material. The Bragg equation is used to calculate the angles for which the peak intensity occurs. The Bragg equation is given by nλ = 2d sinθ, where n is the order of the peak, λ is the wavelength of the X-ray, d is the interplanar spacing of the crystal lattice, and θ is the angle of incidence. The Bragg peaks at 14.9° and 17.2° assigned for CaSn 3 indicate that the material is composed of CaSn 3, a compound of calcium and tin.

The remaining Sn should originate from the decalciation of the excessive amount of the Ca x Sn anode material used for the cell construction. Decalciation is the process of removing calcium from a compound. XRD diffraction patterns for the samples from the 3000th cycle imply that the redox reaction at the anode side mainly depended on the reversible alloying/dealloying of the CaSn 3 phase. Redox reactions are chemical reactions in which electrons are transferred from one species to another. Alloying is the process of combining two or more metals to form an alloy. Dealloying is the process of separating the metals in an alloy.

Based on these results, it is proposed that the decalciation of the bulk Ca x Sn active material is a kinetically favorable process while the reverse process is largely restrictive; and the in-situ formed Sn preferably form CaSn 3 in the subsequent recalciation process, which is most likely due to its the low volume change (7.3% 29 ) during dealloying and alloying. Furthermore, dealloying Ca x Sn and CaSn 3 might simultaneously occur during discharge until the active Ca x Sn in the anode completely transformed to Sn. These results indicate that the Ca x Sn alloy can undergo highly reversible redox reactions and may possess unique structural flexibility enabling circumvention of the structural stress during the electrochemical processes, which render them as promising candidates for use as anodes in Ca-ion batteries."
